In this episode, I give some back story on the origins of Adventure Mind and what I want it to become. I talk about the struggle that the Holiday Season is for me, and why I believe we (humanity) need each other more than we ever have. Separateness is an illusion. We are all connected in some way, shape, or form. As we grow in our resiliency, we can help others grow in theirs. Seeking adversity of our own choosing and cultivating courage by facing our fears is how humanity grows stronger. This is how we build the Adventure Mind.
In this episode, I make brief mention of my struggle with PTSD, major depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Jason also opens up about his own family history, and the book he is currently writing on some difficult events that inspired his father to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Josh’s positivity is immediately apparent to anyone who meets him, and it comes through in this conversation. He attributes much of his positivity to the healing power of the ocean and how fulfilling his life is because of surfing. It is because of his love for the ocean that he has become an advocate for sustainable practices in manufacturing and fishing. Josh doesn’t shy away from darker parts of his story, however. He opens up about his prior addiction to pain relievers and the part that it played in his near death after suffering total kidney and liver failure just ahead of the amputation of both his legs. Josh also shares about the power of music as a creative outlet and how blessed he has been to be able to continue in music as a percussionist.
This conversation goes deep. Scott and Joshua talk about everything from compassion and self forgiveness to inclusion and representation in media. Scott and Joshua also talk about geek culture, their mutual love of Star Trek, and the intense connection fans have with the content they consume. Scott briefly opens up about his battle and victory over cancer, and why he loves Christmas so much.
